The name “Performance Above Potential” came about from an innocent conversation during training camp with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers back in 1992. My Coach, Cal Murphy, called me over during practice and asked me to watch one of the receivers run through a drill. I looked across the field at this specimen who stood about 6’2, 215 lbs and was built like a racehorse with the speed to match. Coach Cal asked me if I thought the player was going to make the team and I blurted out “absolutely!” based on appearance alone. He went on to tell me to isolate that player as he ran the drills. As I watched this guy run a few more routes, I noticed that he only ran full speed when the ball was going to be thrown to him and that he dropped half of the passes thrown his way. Coach Cal, seeing the same thing I was seeing, then said “He has all the potential in the world but is not performing when it matters” followed by “so keep that in mind” and he walked away. Whether Coach Cal knew it or not, that brief exchange transformed my effort and actions going forward and I have never forgotten it. In essence, every player in camp had the talent, skills and ability to make the team, however, only the players that were able to perform consistently above their potential actually cracked the roster.
So what is Performance Above Potential? First, let me define the words:
- PERFORMANCE – the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function.
- ABOVE – at a higher level.
- POTENTIAL – having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future.
Since my conversation with Coach Cal 24 years ago, I have implemented the following habits to work towards unlocking my full potential and so can you:
Consistency is KEY – Be the best possible you on a consistent basis and not the perfect you once in a while.
Strive for Constant Improvement – Work your tail off whether your boss/coach is watching or not. Are you doing your best or the best it can be done? Think about it!
Team – It has been stated that you become the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with so make sure that you have a good team around you at all times. If you hang out with 5 slackers…guess who the 6th is going to be?
Develop a PRO Mindset – Always work to do that best at everything you do. “Good Enough” can’t be in your vocabulary. Only 2% make Pro for a reason!
This foundational thinking recently led me to start “Performance Above Potential” as a way to share the lessons that I have learned over years of study, practice and implementation. My goal is to help you unlock your true potential by coaching and guiding you to develop the discipline required to form the right habits in order to accomplish your goals.
We are all born with unlimited potential and have the opportunity to become the author of our story or the victim of it. Start writing your story today regardless of your age or circumstances and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish one day at a time.
